BEST baby blankets

I'm posting this for Bart since I've already done two blogmercials for my favorite baby stuff, and Bart has commented more than once on how much he likes these blankets for our son. They really are that fantastic! With our baby being born in the summer, I was worried about him getting too hot, so I found these lightweight blankets from Australia by Aden & Anais (http://www.adenandanais.com).

Because they're made out of muslin (finely woven cotton) they're breathable, perfect for babies who like to be swaddled (they're shaped in the perfect square unlike Carters receiving blankets), or for babies (like Benjamin) who are naturally very warm and wiggly and get uncomfortable when wrapped too tightly in a heavier fabric that doesn't give as well. They also get softer and softer after each wash!

I found ours (come in a set of 4 for $44) at Babies R Us, but just saw them at Land Of Nod too.

Lovin' my Moby Wrap

I thought I'd share another one of my fav. baby finds. It's called the Moby Wrap (www.mobywrap.com) and is made out of the BEST soft and stretchy cotton fabric. I was hesitant at first to use a baby carrier due to past strains in my back, but this has proven to be very comfortable. I'm also thrilled to find a way to still bond with my son while having full usage of my arms again!
One of the hardest things about being a first time parent is all of the guesswork involved in decoding baby's cries and understanding their needs. Over the past 2 months we've learned that our son is quite the cuddler and while he didn't seem to care too much for swaddling, he loves cradling, motion, and feeling the repetition of breathing. The Moby is so great for that because it allows babies to get closely nestled in to the carrier's chest and even fall asleep in it without any uncomfortable straps or buckles getting in the way.
The manual that it comes with explains how a mother's chest is designed to change in temperature to meet her baby's needs by responding through biofeedback. It therefore rises if the baby is cold, and decrease if the infant becomes too warm. How cool is that! It also comes with a series of exercises and Yoga poses that are safe to do while carrying the baby in the wrap.
I also thought I'd share Marnie Ko's (author of Carrying Your Baby) top 10 reasons to carry your baby:

1. Baby-carrying provides the elements of pressure, motion, pleasure, warmth, security, and sound that are found in skin-to-skin contact and are essential to the development of the vestibular nervous system.

2. Carrying infants lowers the level of stress hormones and adrenalin circulating in the blood stream of the infant.

3. Carrying helps the baby develop balance and trunk and head control. Infants who are carried sit independently and walk sooner.

4. Baby-carrying enables parents to be acutely responsive and aware of baby's cues and signals. Parents become so sensitive to their baby that they can anticipate hunger needs, waking, and the need for a clean diaper.

5. Baby carrying reduces crying and fussiness (one study found by 43% during the day and 51% at night). Parents therefore feel more competent and nurturing toward their infant.

6. Baby-carrying gives healthy messages of touching to children and they learn to give and receive affection and touching in healthy ways.

7. Babies who are carried cry less, smile more, are less prone to vomiting and spitting up. They also experience reduced or little incidence of colic.

8. Baby-carrying allows the baby to be an active participant in the walking, talking, laughing, movement, and working of the parent.

9. Babies sleep comfortably and for longer periods of time while carried.

10. Babies who are carried have a solid sense of self-esteem and independence. They are also said to initiate separation faster and become more self-reliant.

Peach Cobbler

To go along with my delicious produce pick of the month, I thought I'd share the most easy peasie recipe for PEACH COBBLER. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 stick of butter (i never said it was healthy)
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 cup of real milk (soy doesn't work- i tried!)
1 cup of drained peaches

Directions:
Melt butter in 1 quart Pyrex (glass) dish. Add sugar, flour, and baking powder and mix well. Slowly stir in milk, add peaches, and mix gently. Bake @ 350 in the oven for 1 hr. Goes great with ice cream and serves 6.

I MusTellYa...

that Mustela bebe products are THE BEST! Yes, they are the pricer side, but I figured since the rule goes that you can't spoil a newborn, then this would be the one time for me to feel okay about splurging.
The brand comes from France, (hence the "bebe") and smells so wonderful. I picked up on the scent the minute I walked into Babinski's Baby (a baby boutique in Salt Lake City) and have been hooked on it ever since. We've also received a lot of compliments on how good our little boy smells and I am convinced the PhysiObebe (no-rinse cleansing fluid) is what cleared up his baby acne. Since they advise not to immerse a baby's head into water until much later, this no-rinse face cleanser is so nice and easy to use by putting on a cotton round and gently wiping his face. It also works wonders in the changing area too!
I have yet to find a retailer here in Logan for it, but have found on drugstore.com and babyrus.com. They get rave reviews because of its wonderful clean smell, and because it's hypoallergenic, a must have for babies sensitive skin. Do I sound like an infomercial or what! ;)
So- I'm not sure how much longer I can justify $8 diaper cream, but I'm tellin' ya this stuff makes changing dirty diapers not so bad!

4-1-1 on the F L U scare!

With all of the worry talk going on in the news and around town, I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed with what to do to prepare/defend against the flu. Normally I don't get a flu shot since the one year that I did, I got sick anyway, but with a newborn baby at home, I know Bart and I should be doing everything possible to make sure he stays healthy. I think this article from the NY Times (thanks to them for the above pic as well) does a great job at clearing up some of the myths surrounding what we've been hearing.
The decision maker for Bart and I is that parents with a baby 6 months or younger are considered high priority to get a H1N1 shot. So after hearing this, Bart and I made the decision to get ours as soon as our local health dept can keep them in stock longer than a day! Also, BIG thanks to Rachel for her info on where to go here in Logan for vaccinations- www.brhd.org, as well as the info on the option to request a preservative free shot.
As for our close friends and family members, we'll be leaving the decision on getting vaccinated up to you since we know none of you would expose yourself to our little one while experiencing any flu-like symptoms.
Best wishes for everyone to stay HEALTHY and FLU FREE this season!

Hello Mommyhood

In previous posts I've blogged about my experience while pregnant, and during labor, so here's my first on parenting. Unlike pregnancy or labor preparation I didn't run out and get all of the books, or take any class because I figured my years of babysitting and gift of motherly intutition would serve me well. While this is true, it in no way provided me with the knowledge that I expected it to. Why? Because every child is different and newborns are especially demanding no matter how many baby gadgets you have, how much advice you get, or how much research you do. Those facts right there took me at least 2 wks to accept. Up until then I was convinced that I would just know what to do and that because it was my child who of course would be amazingly perfect!

I've now come to the realization that imperfection is perfection because would I want a child who never needed me, or for myself not to learn something new every day? No-absolutely not. After realizing that each day really is a new learning opportunity, it became quite easy for me to make my decision to resign from my previous job and make mommyhood my new full-time feat.

Given my husband's current schedule of school and full-time work, and no family members close by, we agreed that me taking on a majority of the care giving responsibilities would be best for our family. But- being the modern woman that I am, I wanted to keep my options open and therefore considered going part-time at my previous job to make sure that I kept my mind active. Well, let me just say that my mind is VERY ACTIVE, racing constantly with new worries (my latest being germs due to the new fall season and flu/H1N1 vaccinations), new challenges (how many diapers will he need in a particular size to really determine if buying in bulk is really the most cost effective) and new dreams (before I used to always wonder what a child of ours would look like, now I know, so now I wonder what his personality will be like, what type of foods he'll eat- will he be a vegetarian like me, or a carnivore like his dad?, and what I'll feel on the day when I realize that he's all grown up). Thoughts like these are constant, but as tiring and hard as being a parent is, it's by far the most fulfilling job we've ever had.

We're also aware that having the choice for me to stay at home is a luxury that many couples are not able to make due to financial obligations. With us both having professional backgrounds in finance, we've learned about the value of savings and most of all, the freedom of choices that having money can bring. In fact while my husband and I were dating (close to becoming engaged), we often discussed where we saw our lives going. I remember the day when he was leaning on the kitchen counter and nonchalantly said "Yeah, I see us being pretty mobile for the next 10 yrs. or so." I looked at him in disbelief thinking- he wants us live in a mobile home??? He then explained that he didn't want us to get locked into any big purchases (like a home) too soon. Yes, for some a home can be a good investment, but for many (as we hear about on the news so often) it can lead to financial ruin, limit job opportunities, and cause incredible stress. My parents also gave us this advice right after we got married. They said "Take that trip to Europe, or wherever else you want to travel to to really find out where it is you want to live or experience." That advice has been good for us as we're enjoying the flexibility in renting, the option to switch career paths, and provide what we consider to be the best care for our new baby. It's things like that that you just can't put a price tag on, but that we're so thankful for every day.

So- yeah, we still don't know where we want to live yet, Bart's back in school, and I'm at home with our newborn doing endless loads of laundry, cleaning spit ups, and calculating how much time I have to write a blog post before he's due for his next feeding, but we're all LEARNING and GROWING and are HAPPY which are THE MOST important things. If those accomplishments aren't enough for me to feel good about my new role, then I think of this quote:"Parents make more decisions before noon than the U.S. Surpreme Court does all year!"

Go TWINS!!!!!

CONGRATS TO THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPIONS!!!!! OFF TO NY YOU GO WITH MANY MANY FANS (EVEN IN UTAH) TO SUPPORT YOU!!!!!!
Yes, I'm aware that many find it pretty random when I tell them that I'm Minnesota Twins fan, but in my family it's pretty much a given at birth. With a Dad from South Dakota, he grew up following them since they were the closest city with a major league baseball team. He has since passed down his love to my mother, siblings and I, along with the Minnesota Vikings (this one never took for me since I don't really consider football a sport ;)) and the Utah Jazz (this one makes sense since they're local).
I'm glad I have a passion for sports. I've always been athletic, and was a cheerleader throughout jr.high/high school so I know what a thrill it is to be in the heat of good game and feel the exhilaration of a winning point!
