Pregnancy Chic

I loved last night's episode of PROJECT RUNWAY- it was made just for me! I loved it because I think every pregnant woman should still feel pretty and stylish at every stage in her pregnancy, and this challenge showed that it is possible.
During my pregnancy I've found it very important to continue to have a variety of choices in my wardrobe (you have to since you grow more and more every week). Special thanks to my awesome Mom and sister, Jenna, for all of their help with that!
Here's a link to the designs from last night's challenge....I really liked Christopher's, (I think he'll be one of the finalists by the way) Irina's (although a bit low cut), but the judges were right, Shirin's (shown in the pic above...sorry, I couldn't get it to be any bigger) was definitely the best. Which one is your fav?

THE BEACH

It really doesn't get any better than this. This picture is from the Hyrum Reservoir (only about a 15 min. drive away from where we live), and has truly become one of my favorite places. I've posted before about my attraction to the water during pregnancy and this place gives me the calm serenity and refreshing cool breeze that I need during this time.....I really wonder how we ever did without local lakes while living in SLC!
So- the next time you're in Cache Valley, I highly recommend this spot....just look for the brown recreation sign in Hyrum that says: THE BEACH.

Peep Culture

I know that I've already blogged about the popularity of various forms of electronic communication amongst today's society, but I found some additional points on this topic in an article from salon.com entitled: "Why We Can't Stop Looking" by Amanda Fortini.
In this article, she shares her points of view on what she refers to as "our exceedingly confessional society", Webster Dictionary's 2008 word of the year: overshare, as well as some of the negative outcomes that can arise from publicizing details of our daily life. She also conducts an interview with Niedzviecki, the author of the book shown below, Peep Culture. I have included the parts of the interview that I found the most interesting below; the article in its entirety can be found here:
How did you come up with the term "peep"? There’s the "peep show," of course, but what do you mean exactly when you use the term “peep” alone? Was it something that had previously been used elsewhere, or did you coin it? Is it a noun, a verb, an adjective?

It's everything! When I came up with this idea of “peep culture,” I was thinking of peep shows, and the poor unfortunate character of Peeping Tom, and I also wanted something that would have a nice alliteration with pop culture. Basically what I'm arguing in the book is that we're moving from pop culture to peep culture. In pop culture we spent a lot of time observing and enjoying the exploits of celebrities, particularly their performances — their movies, their music, their dance moves, their comedy — but in peep culture we're shifting to spending a lot time getting entertainment from our life, and from the lives of family, of friends, and of anonymous people around the world. The methods are similar in the sense that you have the mass media and we sit behind screens and engage in long-distance entertainment. But the subject is very different — the subject becomes our lives and the lives of ordinary people, which are not performed or scripted.

It's not like every single person has stopped watching television drama so that they can read their grandmother's blog. It's a shift. Both exist at the same time and will continue to exist, but I believe that peep culture is gaining the upper hand.

There's always been people who seek fame or recognition, but lately it seems as though it’s become an epidemic.

The two things that keep coming up in the book are community and fame. We are, I think, extremely communal creatures. We evolved from apes and monkeys, and they spend a lot of time in groups grooming each other. And that's pretty much how we lived, in communal groups where we depended on each other and groomed each other. With the shift to industrialization, to big cities, to urbanization came the end of the kind of communities that provide us with inherent recognition. We had lived in a community where everyone knew who we were whether we liked it or not, where anonymity was not an option, where we didn't have to work at being noticed because we simply were. But now we have these big cities, we have pop culture, we have everyone sitting at home watching television, and we don't have those kinds of communities anymore, and yet we are hardwired to want that.

But paradoxically, we also have the whole issue of fame and celebrity, which confuses things. At the same time as we are finding that we're getting the kind of communal stroking — the cyber-grooming — that we long for, we also start to think, hmmm, maybe I'm a celebrity now. That desire to have relationships with people in which they know a lot about you and you don't have to know anything about them, which is sort of the quintessential celebrity relationship — that creeps in, and it skews things quite a bit.
I find Niedzviecki's point about us shifting from us once watching staged performances by entertainers to now being entertained by the daily details of each other's life, so true! Before reality T.V., I remember watching my favorite artists sing/dance on MTV, beauty pageant contestants compete on Miss America, and comedians perform crazy skits on Saturday Night Live. Even though those shows are still on, I rarely watch any of them as I'm more drawn to watching reality shows. There is something compelling about being invited to some one's real life, and as Niedzviecki points out in his answer to the last question, we are after all communal creatures who require at least a small amount of daily human interaction. Even though I too consider myself private by nature, I agree with this statement.
I am interested to hear your thoughts on this subject of communal recognition and socialization, and what type of community (urban or small town) you like living in, and why.

Follow up to Shrunken Marshmallows....

I noticed today on the front of the box that it actually says: Magically Delicious Lucky Charms with Mini-Marshmallows!
Why anyone would willingly shrink the best part of this cereal is
truly beyond me. I have yet to confirm if boxes of the "regular" sized marshmallows are still available for purchase, as I obviously wasn't paying very close attention when I bought this box.
I'll be sure to post another follow-up to this follow-up....or, if any of you happen to notice next time you're at the grocery store- let me know! ;)

New fav....I n g r i d

I will be the first to admit that I'm a late-comer when it comes to music. I'm also bad at remembering the names of songs, and often come up with my own version of lyrics!
Recently my brother, Chris, introduced me to a free internet radio site~ www.pandora.com that magically picks out artists/songs that it thinks you will like based on other artists/songs that you tell it you like. It was here that I discovered INGRID MICHAELSON who unsurprisingly isn't a new artist, just new to me. She is very chill, but catchy. Reminds me quite a bit of Norah Jones....someone who you could listen to over and over and become so happy and relaxed. ;)
MY FAV SONGS BY INGRID:
  • All Love~ single
  • Be OK~ Be OK album
  • You and I~ Be OK album (my fav.! this song really makes me smile every time i hear it....so cute.)
  • Breakable~ Girls & Boys album
  • The Way I Am~ Girls & Boys album (i like it when she says: "I'll buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair.....)
  • Creep~ single
  • Let Go~ Slow the Rain album
  • Morning Lullabies~ Slow the Rain album
  • Turn to Stone~ Turn to Stone album

From Bravo to Lifetime!

I cannot express how excited I was when I found out that the rumors are true---PROJECT RUNWAY will now air on the television station Lifetime instead of Bravo! After we moved last year we decided expanded cable wasn't really worth our money, so we downgraded. The only station I've really missed has been Bravo because of this show, and now I'll be able to watch again....wahooo!
Check out the premier of Season 6 exactly 1 week from today on Lifetime~ Thurs. Aug. 20th!

Shrunken Marshmellows! :O

Every few months or so I splurge by purchasing a box of sugary cereal. I normally eat pretty healthily (some would say very healthily), but every so often I'll want something kinda fattening. So, while I was at the grocery store yesterday I went with my craving for some magically delicious Lucky Charms. This morning when it was hard for me to get out of bed, I thought of the whole grain oats and sugary marshmallows awaiting me downstairs and....up I sprat to pour me a bowl! While doing so, I unfortunately noticed something quite alarming....the marshmallows (aka the best part of Lucky Charms) are now itsy bitsy! I quickly poured in some milk hoping that would plumpen them up to their normal size, but to no avail. I then remembered how this isn't the first time I've been disappointed with General Mills, as a couple of years ago they were skimping on the number of marshmallows included in each box. That thankfully got corrected (at least in my opinion) but this new problem makes me wonder if I should take further action and write-in my dissatisfaction with their product, or if I simply got a bad box. So, if any body else has experienced shrunken marshmallows in their recent box of Lucky Charms, please let me know and I'll do what I can to get them back up to size!

The Tulip Skirt

tu*lip skirt (noun): 1. similar to a pencil skirt, but with wider hips and a short hemline. tulip skirts cinch at the waist, balloon out at the hips (usually through the use of pleats or ruching) and then taper back down to the legs. 2. a must-have summer item for every fashionista. I heard through the grapevine that this skirt is turning up everywhere. I'll have to wait until post-baby to see if the trend continues....I hope so because I LOVE tulips! Here's some TUtips on how to wear (taken from: http://www.shabbyapple.com/blog/2009/08/blooming-bottoms.html)
  • Tulip skirts look best on women with a medium or thin build, but the ballooning hips are forgiving, so just about anyone can get in on the trend.

  • Since it defeats the whole purpose of the skirt to cover the unique waist and pleating or detailing, tulip skirts are best paired with short-waisted tops, or thin blouses and shirts that can be tucked in. If you simply must layer a cardigan or blazer over a tight-fitting top, leave it open so the detail of the skirt can still be seen.

  • If you're going for long legs, wear heels with your tulip skirt. If the skirt's style is more casual, ballet flats are the way to go.

  • And don't think your tulip skirt days are numbered. When the weather turns cold, pair your skirt with neutral tights, or go for the monochromatic look with a tulip skirt, tights and shoes in the same shade.

Available at nordstrom.com (although a bit pricey), and I'm sure eventually at Anthropologie. Cheaper versions may also be found at Urban Outfitters (Gateway Mall in SLC).

Logan's first Root Beer Brew Pub!

There's a new hot spot in town folks! No, it's not a bar, (it is still Logan afterall) but a root beer pub! They also serve Moab brews since one of the founders is the Ops Manager of Moab Brewery. It's called The Beehive Grill and it's located on: 255 S. Main St. Hours: 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Mon- Sun. No, that's not a typo, it's really open on Sunday's! http://www.thebeehivegrill.com/ Official scoop: Bart and I went there last weekend with my parents and while some items on their menu could use a bit of improvement, they have really good french fries (don't let the waiter try and persuade you to get the onion rings....they're VERY greasy), and DELICIOUS, fresh root beer! They also serve gelato but this is where it gets kinda tricky because you can't order that while dining. There's a booth right when you walk in that is seperate/but the same company? that you get it from. We made sure to let our waiter know that this is odd and is actually what detoured us from ordering it (eventhough we wanted it), so hopefully this policy will change. That aside, this place is definitely worth a stop by. It has a very nice interior, friendly staff, and a VEGETARIAN selection!

Women In Business

There's a group here known as Women In Business (WIB). You don't have to be employed to join, and I've yet to ever have to pay a membership fee. They are simply a group of women in the valley who gather every second Tuesday for lunch at various restaurants around town featuring some kind of speaker, or event, such as an auction. The proceeds go towards creating scholarships for young women seeking Business degrees at USU. Here's details on the one for this month: The August Women in Business luncheon and meeting will be held Tuesday, August 11, at 11:45 a.m., at the Copper Mill, 55 North Main, Logan. Note the new time! Please be seated by 11:55 a.m. The raffle closes at 11:55 a.m. and the luncheon begins promptly at noon. The topic this month is Grocery Guru. Make the most of your grocery budget! Grocery Guru Ken Roesbery will show you how to save money and stretch your family’s food dollars. Cost for the luncheon is $12. All Women in Business members and other interested professional women are invited. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Tammy Selley by 9 a.m. Monday, August 10, to tammy.selley@imail.org.
