Great Dates

Bart and I have been having some really great dates lately. Nothing super fancy, nothing too expensive, just he and I carving out some time to spend together.

Last Saturday was a day worth remembering~ we lucked out with our babysitter being available last minute, so we took a couple of hours to walk around downtown Logan checking out old homes. We both have an appreciation for art, architecture, and history, so attending this Historic Home Tour was right up our alley (btw-  I meant to post about this going on earlier last week, but wasn't able to due to some necessary computer maintenance...man is it nice to be married to a computer wizard! But I hear they offer the tours every year, so if this is something you're interested in be sure to check back here around this time next year...I know downtown SLC offers historic home tours too!).

Not only were the home amazing, but we loved how just by simply walking a few blocks from where we live we felt like we were taking a step back in time...almost like steps in a foreign country...we even looked like tourists with the camera round our necks, and our constant studying of our maps and brochure.

Marriner Eccles home (shown right) was our definite favorite. You can click here for a cool history lesson about it as well as some of the renovation work that has since gone into it by its current owners, Robert and Barbara Guy (Robert happens to be an incredibly talented artist). We both loved how they successfully combined style and art from many different design periods...nothing matched per say, but it all went together beautifully- which is my favorite way to decorate!

This below home was also quite remarkable. It still kept the floor plan with an actual butlers pantry, maids quarters, as well as a separate home out back where the butlers lived. I've often walked past this home in awe and was so excited to finally get to take a step inside! It had lots of warm and charming details (like that awesome walk around porch) that Bart and I hope to find in a home one day.

Other fun dates this summer has been to the Eccles theater where we saw Kiss Me Kate (one I've always wanted to see ;)). For those of you who didn't know this, NYC actors, opera singers, and dancers come to good ole Logan during the summers so that all of us can enjoy their talents at a fraction of the cost! Plus, just by buying one of these awesome coupon books (I picked up mine at The Book Table) you can score really good deals...like a buy one ticket get one free.

We've also been into movies lately. Nothing new in the theaters, just rentals (I even went old school and picked us up Hastings memberships). Fun thing about being out of it for awhile is that we have a large selection of movies that neither one of us have seen. Out of the 4 recently rented, I would recommend 3. 3 outta 4 ain't bad, right?

THIS MEANS WAR

It was a bit predictable, but funny, and entertaining. Good blend of not too much action (I still have yet to ever understand any of the Bourne Identity films) and not too much chick flick, which I'm pretty sure is the balance they were going for.

IN TIME

Both Bart and I really liked this one. From the get go it had me on the edge of my seat....actually I felt a bit anxious the entire time we watched it! While RottenTomatoes.com wasn't all that fond of it (but, hey they didn't like Leap Year either, which I think we can all agree is one sweet hearted little love story), but I really enjoyed the plot and the moral/societal questions it brought to mind. Thanks for the recommend Tami, you're right, it sure did make us think.

5 YEAR ENGAGEMENT

This one is funny. Yes it's also crass, jaw dropping, and a bit too graphic at times, but I would be lying if I didn't give it credit for being funny. And well done. In this age of numerous humorous (say that 10x!) wedding related films, this one isn't like the rest and isn't what I thought it was going to be about. I liked the introspection it provides on relationships as well as the unique connection couples (couples who are truly right for each other that is) can have. Oh, and in my opinion all that inappropriate stuff is easy to get past....all totally worth it for the conversation between Elmo and Cookie Monster. Trust me, just trust me, this film is worth your time.

So whether it be scoring tickets to a local function, or simply staying home and renting a movie, plan something fun for you and your significant other. It's always nice to have something to look forward to and it sure is relaxing to check out and/or step away every once in awhile. Oh, and for those of you wondering what the 4th movie was, it was ONE DAY starring Anne Hathaway. I didn't mind watching it, just don't consider it a must see. If any of you have any must see movie recommendations, I'd love to hear 'em!

Hope you all are enjoying this last bit of summer...we made sure to go to the Aquatic Center on its last day of the season....surprisingly it wasn't very busy, the weather not too hot, and the water just right. Ahhhh....But I'm totally ready to welcome fall now. Bring on the apple orchard and hay rides, and some more of those pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and Chai!
