Un-Packing Process

We're at our new place!

Recovery has been a bit rough around here especially since I got sick the week of our move, but I've now got my house head back together and am feeling lots better! We also had an incredible moving crew (thanks again to Bart's awesome fraternity brothers), willing in-laws and parents who cleaned, made millions of trips up and down stairs with my multitude of clothes, workhorse of a husband who also cleaned, packed more boxes than he would've liked, drove our huge truck, orchestrated movers, and transported lots of heavy stuff, my wonderful Mary Poppins-of-a-Mother who does everything with a smile and a song, and my hands-on Dad who does everything I'm so thankful to have a Dad to do.

While I knew this move was going to be a bit hectic while caring for our two kids, a b-day party full of 2 year olds the following weekend, and a husband starting back up in school soon after, let's just say overall everything went VERY well. I keep reminding myself of that because at first I was feeling pretty disoriented. I later began to wonder how I could've been better prepared.... so far all I've come up with is that on the day of our move I should've packed up the boys and gone somewhere to R-E-L-A-X because I definitely underestimated how emotionally draining it can be. I did make plans to keep the boys and I away, but it was a hot and busy Saturday with crowds everywhere for back-to-school shopping which equated to one long and tired day. :O Thankfully, my mom dropped everything and stayed with us for a few days: heaven sent!!!

Next time

  • Call up Jimmy Johns for delivery of lunch to our moving crew
  • Transport kids and I somewhere far away so that I can mentally check out
  • Pack each of us overnight bags with essentials for the new place just as if we were going on a trip somewhere
  • Have 3 main boxes clearly labeled with the following items: box cutter/scissors, cleaning supplies, and paper goods (ie toliet paper, paper plates, plastic utensils, cups)

Now that the hardest part of this moving experience is behind us, I am coming to peace with the un-packing process. A process of sorting and organizing, a process of problem solving and patience, a process of give and take. So, even though I've moved quite a bit in my day, I'm here to confess that I've yet to ever really do it well. But, that's okay because with the right help everything eventually does get cleared out, all the boxes will get un-packed, and I'll soon have a tour of our new place to share.

Oh, and speaking of new...my husband and I have our first niece!
Her name is... O l i v i a  R o s e  and she is also the boys first cousin.
Looking forward to meeting her and introducing her to the family sometime very soon!

  1. I was wondering if you guys were in the new place yet! I can't imagine moving with 2 kids, but it sounds like you guys did well for what you had to work with! :) It will all get done, in time! Can't wait to see photos!
