The Song of A Mother

Sheet music cover illustration for Mother's Old Sweet Lullaby by M.C. Weasner
It's amazing how often I find myself singing now that I'm a mom. Amazing because before I would NEVER sing (okay, maybe occasionally by myself in the car), but now I can't seem to get through a day without chanting along to the ABC's with Benjamin, breaking out The Wheels On The Bus (with actions) every time I change Grant, or the ever-so-annoying, but ever-so-effective Clean Up song from Barney (don't act like you don't know it, I know you do).

I've also found it amazing how being a mom makes you recall so much of your own childhood. Mine was filled with my mother's voice singing.....singing all the time.....I still love the sound of her voice. It's beautiful and strong and comforting. On the day of Benjamin's Baptism she sang Edelweiss to him, and I remember wishing her voice could always pour through our home. When I close my eyes and hum a tune of one of the songs she would sing, I can actually hear the exact tone of her voice and remember the way that I felt when she sang it to us. Below is one of my favorites that she would sing while putting us to sleep...I've also included the lyrics below, so feel free to sing along!

TODAY

(Words and Music by Minstrels' leader Randy Sparks)
Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today.

Now I'll be a dandy, and I'll be a rover.
You'll know who I am by the song that I sing.
I'll feast at your table, I'll sleep in your clover.
Who cares what tomorrow shall bring.

I can't be contented with yesterday's glory.
I can't live on promises, winter to spring.
Today is my moment, and now is my story.
I'll laugh and I'll cry and I'll sing.

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today.
